Emerson DeltaV Systems

Avid Solutions designs and implements solutions for batch and continuous processes for DeltaV systems. We also have extensive PI™ Historian experience, which is the historical data engine within DeltaV Systems. Customers gain substantial analytical ability when we extend PI systems to generate customized trends and reports using PI ProcessBook and PI Excel Datalink.

Sample Projects:

Multi-phase Specialty Chemical System
Avid's responsibility included pre-engineering, complete electrical and instrumentation design, control panel fabrication, system configuration, checkout, and start-up. Avid developed control system flow charts, worked with the client to develop project implementation plans, created system P&IDs, and generated project estimates for the control hardware, E&I installation, and engineering efforts. Upon completion of the FEL and approval of the job, Avid Solutions provided electrical and instrumentation design including E&I contractor bid packages, instrumentation specification, and electrical schematics and loop sheets. Avid also designed and fabricated all required control panels, configured the DeltaV™ system graphics, controllers, and batch recipes, and provided operator training simulators and training assistance. Upon construction completion-hour post start-up support. The DeltaV system now includes a batch server and engineering development station, each on separate server class machines, as well as a system historian. The control system consists of seven controllers and nine operator stations controlling six different process areas across a half mile. Phase five installed DeltaV controls on two dual fuel boilers. The new combustion control system incorporates fully redundant controllers and utilizes Modbus serial communications to track interlock and first-out status of the independent burner management system. Redundant fiber optic network communication allows the boilers to be remotely monitored and controlled from two different operating areas.

Paper Mill Evaporator Train
International Paper called on Avid Solutions at the earliest stage of the project. As a vendor-neutral engineering firm with experience in the whole range of technologies and products, Avid was able to make an unbiased recommendation. The recommendation was an Emerson DeltaV™ version 7.3 DCS, which the Avid consultants knew would provide ease of programming, a high degree of flexibility, and the ability to expand inexpensively as the need developed.

Avid Solutions was responsible for system configuration and start up support of the new DCS system. The existing DCS was an old International Paper proprietary system, and complete reconfiguration was required to install the new DeltaV system. The evaporator train consists of six evaporator vessels with a stripper and condenser in front of the first effect evaporator. The new system also controls the black liquor storage and preparation areas.

Albemarle Corporation
Avid Solutions recently completed a 17-month project at Albemarle Corporation’s Orangeburg, SC facility.  The project involved the installation of more than 3,100 I/O points and an Avid team that peaked at 12 people. Albemarle, a specialty chemical company, makes over 100 products at the plant, on eight separate production units. Avid replaced antiquated control systems in all eight units with Delta V technology, which Albemarle had chosen on the basis of its batch features – and its strong track record.

Three of the eight units are used for the manufacture of pharmaceutical products, including ibuprofen, and thus had to be validated. Avid Solutions provided all the required validation documentation and authored and executed the installation and qualification documents.
